A terpsichorean journey through Philippine fashion and romance at the Maynila Ballroom of the Manila Hotel

Manila Hotel brings to the city a spectacular presentation of good food, fashion, dance and song. From August 23 to September 4, enjoy a sumptuous Filipino Buffet as you watch two vibrant shows set in the picturesque and historical Maynila Ballroom. Directed by renowned director Freddie Santos, the Grand Dame offers colorful musical masterpieces that encapsulate the very best of Filipino arts and culture.

Kultura Fashionista is the lunchtime cultural show conceptualized to be a terpsichorean frolic through food and fashion. This show features native dances performed by the Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild and Philippine couture created by select designers from the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines.

The show starts with The Dance of the Malongs, which may be deemed as the oldest fashion show in history and conveys an artful display of the many ways the Malong or wrap cloth of native tribes can be worn. It then proceeds to enthrall audiences with an exquisite display of authentic Philippine fashion from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, and ends with the national dance of the islands, the Tinikling, which brings out the incredible dexterity and footwork of the Sindaw dancers.

At dinner, be serenaded by Romansa!, a nightly stage musical that conveys the heartwarming love story of two star-crossed lovers—a city boy and a country girl—who crossed paths and fell deeply in love. The girl is played by 19-year old soprano Fame Flores, who was trained by New York Metropolitan Opera singer Evelyn Mandac, and the boy is played by R & B Master Brenan Espartinez. Together, their powerful voices bring to life a tapestry of Original Pilipino Music favorites combined with cultural dances. The musical is divided into six major parts that depict the progression of love in real life: The Meeting, The Courtship, The Understanding, The Misunderstanding, The Reconciliation, and The Promise of Forever. The end result is a very visual romantic tale that portrays the eclectic and colorful romance between the East and the West, the countryside and the city, the traditional and the trendy. It ends with the majestic Singkil Dance, the Muslim wedding dance of Mindanao, which is performed by the Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild accompanied by live percussionists and gong players. Musical Direction is by ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Dream Academy Musical Director Monet Silvestre.

The cultural shows are priced at P1,650 (lunch show) and P1,950 (dinner show) per person. For more information please call the Manila Hotel at 5270011 local 7.

Books help shape young minds and stir children’s imaginations. It also empowers them with knowledge and creativity while having fun. In support to its goal of helping develop well rounded children, Jollibee enjoins kids to widen their interest for reading with a special one-day only promo exclusive for Jollibee Kids Club members.

“We want to help raise awareness and greater appreciation for our local children’s books,” says Albert Cuadrante, Jollibee Vice President for Marketing. “We believe that kids would be able to relate well with the various stories and discover more about the Filipino culture in a fun and appealing manner. More importantly, as they enjoy these stories that will hopefully be read to them by their parents, they will pick up values that would help them become better, well-rounded children.”

After recently partnering with the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) for this year’s National Book Day celebration, the country’s leading fast food chain further influences kids to read more, enjoy and learn from these well-crafted, locally produced books.

On August 15, Jollibee gives away selected Pinoy storybooks from among the winning titles cited by the PBBY during the recent National Childen’s Book Awards ceremony last July 24.

Lub-Dub, Lub-Dub is a heartwarming story written by Russell Molina and illustrated by Jomike Tejido. Published by The Bookmark, Inc., it tells the story of an observant girl and her encounters with her younger sister’s doctor. The book manages to touch the emotions by reminding readers that despite differences, we all have one sound of a beating heart.

Tagu-Taguan is a book that teaches kids how to count in Filipino. Written and illustrated by Jomike Tejido, and published by Tahanan Publishing Inc., Tagu-Taguan is not just a typical counting book as it is also filled with artistic recreations of backyard creatures – from spiders and earthworms to butterflies. Counting has never been more appealing to both the eye and mind as the book provides a refreshing take on the basic numbers game.

Lastly, Just Add Dirt, written by Becky Bravo, illustrated by Jason Moss and published by Adarna House, is a book written for kids ages 8 to 10.
